Embodying Environment a tertiary move

Embodying the Environment.  We can be set pieces. We can be crowds. We can be animals. We can be inanimate.  Bottom line, we can flesh out the stage picture as Tertiary Players without adding to the dialogue.  Check out this great example of players assuming the role of what other players were seeing on a screen.

Silent Games

Aaron Grant once took the stage across from me, making eye contact but planting his feet firmly just beyond the stage right wing. I mirrored him on stage left. He mimed the classic flirtatious fishing move. I played his fish but broke his line bashfully, the stage's distance remaining between us. I danced as someone […]

"Tonight..." a warm up

Getting synced with your teammates is why we warm up. Give this activity a try! Everyone in a circle.  One by one, in no particular order, we enter the circle. "Tonight I'm..." First we share our current mindset with the group. For example, "Tonight I'm feeling tired. I stayed up too late and woke up […]

Herman The Worm group warm-up

Here's an annoying song my baby likes: Herman The Worm Here's the thing... It makes for one fun group warm-up with echos of One Person, To The Ether, Help Desk and Hey Everybody game patterns.  Give it a try!

Build Your Own World exercise

"World Building" is a noble pursuit in long form improvisation.  It can focus our creativity to try to link our scenes to a single location, time or conceit.  The Chicago-based People of Earth, for example, placed all of their scenes on the same train. Horse Apples set an entire long-form in a future where everyone […]

Organic Warm-ups

It's all about the Set move. Remember: Anything's an Offer. A group of improvisers gather pre-show. They take off excess clothes. They empty their pockets. They ask about each other's day. One guy tells a story about an out-of-the-blue run-in with an old friend that happened that day. Another improviser tells her own story about […]

Sustainable Set - The Johnsons Cover Coldplay

Learn rigidly. Play loose.  The Johnsons are the most dyed-in-the-wool Improv As Improv Does Best group there is. Makes sense. I coach them. They were taught the contents of this website. They learned the mechanics of spontaneous collaboration. But the desire has never been for them to conform to one style of improv as dictated by […]

The Johnsons' 100% Organic Family Band Solution

I coach The Johnsons, so they've been steeped in a rich tea of group games. They know One Person Scenes. They know To The Ether Games.  They know Help Desk Games. And they know Hey Everybody Games. And that knowledge makes them masters of the Organic Game. And that unfortunately means sometimes they perform games […]

BBQ Blowout an organic game

The Johnsons hosted a BBQ and everyone came.  But they spaced out their arrival to allow time to heighten the sequence between new entries.  Check it out. [wpvideo jJJTjvrC] To clarify: That last line out of Jonathan is "I brought the hounds of hell." The Johnsons are: Scott Beckett, Shawn Hambright, Townsend Hart, John Hilowitz, […]
